AVAILABILITY OF RECORDS:
These materials are available from 8-5. Ask for help at the Reference Desk on the second floor. If possible, a
librarian or staff member will take you downstairs to access records. If it is after hours and no one is available
who can access the records, please contact the Reference Desk or the Special Collections department to arrange an
appointment with a knowledgeable staff member.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS
:
Birth records from within the past 75 years, and death records from within the past 25 years, are protected
records. Though some microfilm reels may contain protected and unprotected records, the entire reel must be
restricted, so some older records may be unavailable on microfilm. The lists in this guide show what records are
available at SHSU (as far as is possible). Some records can also be obtained from the Texas Department of State
Health Services (TDSHS) Vital Statistics Unit (may require a fee). Contact Texas Vital Statistics online at
http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/vs/default.shtm
, by phone at (888) 963-7111, or by mail at:
Texas Vital Statistics
Department of State Health Services
P.O. Box 12040
Austin, TX 78711-2040
Additionally, unofficial indexes for some records may be found free online from websites like the Texas GenWeb
Project (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/walker/walktoc.htm
).
MORE RESOURCES AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY:
If you are looking for genealogical information, Huntsville Public Library has an extensive collection and
volunteers to help people do research. You may find more resources there than at SHSU.

GRIMES COUNTY, WPA TAX SURVEY RECORDS
The State-Wide Tax Survey was authorized by the Works Progress Administration on November 25,
1935 to provide for the more equitable and systematic appraisal of real estate throughout Texas. Out of 254
counties, the work was completed in 207. For more complete information on this project interested
individuals are directed to Works Progress Administration Division of Women's and Professional Projects
Report of the State-Wide Tax Survey of Texas; Austin: 1938. A copy of this report may be found in the Texas
A&M University Library, #336.2 t35r.
The all too few surviving county level records of this project provide a valuable description of the
property and structures during the Great Depression. Information included: the name of the owner as of
January 1, 1936; assessed value from 1926 to 1935; soil types; the number of acres used for the home, a
garden, in cultivation, in waste land, in pasture in meadows, in woodlands; the number of acres terraced, cut
over, in second growth timber, in virgin timber; mineral leases; distance from county seat, local market,
school, and church on what type of road; whether served by school bus, electricity, and gas; tenancy; crops
grown; and a description of structures to include dimensions, date built, type of foundation, roof, how heated,
how lit, plumbing, etc.
Of the 509 land grants comprising Grimes County, survey sheets have survived for ca. 360. Though not
complete, the forms are among the best that have been found as of May 1988. Most are the typed, transcribed
copy rather than the handwritten working notes that are common to other counties.
