Executive Summary
Enrollment Fall 2022
Total census enrollment is 6,445, a decrease of 728 students (10.1%) from the previous fall
semester.
Total undergraduate enrollment is 5,464. This is a decrease of 683 students (11.1%) from fall
2021. Full-time undergraduate enrollment is 4,861 a decrease of 523 students (9.7%).
Total degrees granted for 2021-22 is 2,049; a decrease of 6.5 percent from last year. There
were 1,424 Bachelor’s degrees and 625 Masters and Advanced Certificates granted.
Total graduate enrollment is 981, a decrease of 45 students (4.4%) from fall 2021.
Total enrollment in the residence halls is 1,683. This is a decrease of 50 students (2.9%) from
fall 2021. Since fall 2018, residence hall occupancy has decreased by 28.9 percent.
Demographics Fall 2022
Ninety-six (96.0) percent of our total enrollment is from New York State. Fifty-four (54.0)
percent is from Erie County; seven (7.2) percent is from Niagara County; twenty-three (22.9)
percent is from the Metro NYC area, and twelve (11.9) percent is from other New York State
Counties.
Fifty-two (51.8) percent of the college’s undergraduate enrollments are minority students.
Forty-six (45.6) percent of total undergraduates are classified as underrepresented minorities.
Graduate minority student enrollment is 246 (25.1%). Graduate underrepresented minority
student enrollment increased slightly to twenty-one (21.4) percent from twenty (19.7) percent
the previous fall.
Women represent fifty-eight (57.9) percent of the total student population. Fifty-five (55.0)
percent of our undergraduates and seventy-four (73.9) percent of graduate student population
are women. This is a decrease of 0.4 percentage points for our graduate student population
from the previous fall.
New Students Fall 2022
New freshman enrollment is 1,276. This is a decrease of 89 students (6.5%) from fall 2021.
New transfer enrollment is 435, a decrease of 52 students (10.7%) from fall 2021.
New graduate enrollment is 306. This is an increase of 35 students (12.9%) from fall 2021.

Academic Profile, First-time Full-time Fall 2022
The mean high school average for all first-time, full-time students increased to 84.0 from 83.4
last fall. The mean SAT Composite (verbal and math) score for all first-time, full-time
students increased to 1062 from 1052. For Fall 2021 and Fall 2022, SUNY has directed
campuses to be test-optional due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For fall 2022, only 13% of the
First-time, Full-time matriculated students submitted standardized test scores. This resulted in
a larger than expected increase in SAT Composite scores in fall 2021 and fall 2022.
The mean high school average for honors students increased 0.6 points is 94.6. The mean
SAT score for honors students is 1160.
The mean high school average for general freshmen increased slightly to 84.5 from 84.0 the
previous fall. The mean SAT Composite score increased 12 points to 1073.
The mean high school average for EOP students increased slightly to 79.6 from 79.4 last fall.
The mean SAT score decreased 77 points to 891.
FTE Fall 2022
Total FTE is estimated at 5,568. This is a decrease of 619 FTE (10.0%) from fall 2021.
Total undergraduate FTE is estimated at 4,979. This is a decrease of 605 FTE (10.8%) from
fall 2021.
Total graduate FTE is estimated 589, down 14 FTE (2.3%) from the previous fall.
School of Arts and Sciences Fall 2022
Total enrollment is 2,523, a decrease of 348 students (12.2%) from fall 2021. The school
enrollment represents thirty-nine (39.1) percent of the total college enrollment and forty-two
(41.5) percent of the undergraduate population.
School of Education Fall 2022
Total enrollment is 1,036 a decrease of 99 students (8.7%) from fall 2021. It represents
sixteen (16.1) percent of the total college enrollment and ten (10.1) percent of the
undergraduate population. The School of Education’s graduate enrollment of 483 represents
forty-nine (49.2) percent of the graduate population and is the largest of the four graduate
schools.
School of the Professions Fall 2022
Total enrollment is 2,388, a decrease of 212 students (8.2%) from fall 2021. The school
represents thirty-seven (37.1) percent of the college’s total enrollment and forty (40.1)
percent of the total undergraduate enrollment. The school represents twenty (20.2) percent of
the graduate enrollment.

First-Time, full-time, One-Year Retention Rate at Buffalo State (fall 2021 Cohort)
The first-time, full-time retention rate is forty-nine (49.3) percent, one (1.0) percentage point
higher than last fall. First-year retention rate increased to fifty-three (52.6) percent from forty-
seven (47.0) percent for the School of Arts & Sciences. First-year retention decreased for
School of Education and School of the Professions from the previous fall. The School of
Education first-year retention was the highest among the three schools at 59.5% and the
School of the Professions was the lowest at 45.7%.
First-year retention rate for residential students increased from forty-three (42.7) percent to
forty-five (44.5) percent. First-year retention rate for commuter students increased from fifty-
four (54.0) percent to fifty-eight (58.3) percent.
First-year retention rate for Muriel A. Howard Honors program (MAH) students increased
from seventy-two (72.1) percent to seventy-nine (79.0) percent when compared to the fall
2020 cohort. Muriel A. Howard Honors program (MAH) has the highest retention rate among
all cohorts for fall 2021.
First-year retention rate for Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students decreased to
forty (39.7) percent from fifty-one (50.5) percent when compared to the fall 2020 cohort.
First-year retention rate for female students (51.7%) is higher than the first-year rate for male
students (46.6%). Male student first-year rate decreased by 1.9 percentage points from fall
2021. Since fall 2017, our female retention rate has decreased 12.2 percentage points from
63.9%.
First-year retention rate for SAY YES students increased to fifty-three (53.1) percent from
fifty-one (51.0) percent, an increase of two (2.1) percentage points.
