Sector Long Island Sound Command Master Chief
Master Chief Pellinen assumed the duties as the Reserve Command Master Chief for Sector Long Island
Sound in October of 2014. His primary responsibility is to advise the Sector Commander on issues and
initiatives pertaining to all Coast Guard Reserve members within the Sector. Sector Long Island Sound
area of responsibility covers Long Island Sound from the New York - Connecticut border to the
Connecticut - Rhode Island border at Watch Hill, RI. Most recently Master Chief Pellinen served as the
Assistant Engineering Officer at Port Security Unit 301, Cape Cod, MA.
Master Chief Jarl Pellinen enlisted into the Coast Guard in October of 1995 and attended recruit basic
training at TRACEN Cape May, NJ. Upon completion, he reported to CG Search and Rescue Detachment
Moriches on Long Island, NY. At the rank of Fireman, his duties included small boat engineer and
boarding team member for search & rescue and law enforcement missions. Most notable was his direct
involvement as first boat on scene for the recovery efforts of the tragic airliner plane crash, TWA Flight
800, in July of 1996.
Further pursuing his military career, MCPO Pellinen attended Machinery Technician School at TRACEN
Yorktown, VA. Upon graduation he reported to the Coast Guard Cutter Northland home ported in
Portsmouth, VA. While serving on board the cutter he conducted numerous large quantity narcotic
seizures, SAR operations, and was advanced to the rank of Machinery Technician 2
nd
Class.
In May of 2000 MCPO Pellinen returned to New England and reported to CG Station Castle Hill, in
Newport RI. During November of 2002, having completed his second enlistment contract, he transitioned
into Coast Guard Reserves. Shortly after joining the reserve program he was recalled back to active duty
in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting waterside security in New York harbor. Upon
advancement to Chief Petty Officer in September of 2004, he took on the role of Senior Enlisted Reserve
Advisor for the reserve program at Station Castle Hill. After filling the SERA position for six years,
MCPO Pellinen was advanced to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and transferred to Port Security
Unit 301 Engineering Division. While with PSU 301, he deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as the
Assistant Engineering Officer.
Master Chief Pellinen is a graduate of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer’s Academy and the Coast
Guard Senior Enlisted Leadership Course. Additionally, he holds an Associates of Architectural Design
Technology from Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, CT.
Master Chief Pellinen’ personal awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal with an
operational distinguishing device; Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Coast Guard Achievement
Medal’s with an operational distinguishing device; Coast Guard Letter of Commendation ribbon with an
operational distinguishing device; (6) Good Conduct awards; and numerous other individual and unit
awards. He also earned a Boat Forces Operations insignia and the Port Security Insignia.
Master Chief Pellinen hails from Griswold, CT. He is married to Rebecca and they have one son, Mason.
