A Message from our Leadership
The Year of 2020 Vision
Carolyn King Sherill K. Williams
Chair, Board of Directors President & CEO
$ 4,403,731
As we reflect on our 2020-2021 fiscal year, Prevent Blindness (PBO) can be proud
that we continued to offer a full range of sight saving services without hesitation,
even though the pandemic brought many unexpected challenges. We quickly
changed the way in which we reach people so that our services could be delivered
in creative ways that used technology when in-person was not possible.
It was also a year of planning for change in leadership. After 35 years of service as
President & CEO of Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate, Sherry Williams retired in
2021. PBOs Board of Directors already had a succession plan in place for many
years to assure that our good work continues with strong leadership. Amy Pulles,
Vice President of PBO and a long-time staff leader, will assume the role of President
& CEO in 2022. As our commitment to you – our donors and partners – we are in
good hands!
Even in these time of change, our focus has been steady in serving individuals at
highest risk for vision problems – children under age 6, people with diabetes, ethnic
groups prone to glaucoma, seniors and those without financial resources to get the
eye care they need. Our programs and services reached nearly 300,000 Ohioans of
all ages and walks of life last year.
Your support of Prevent Blindness makes it possible for us to have the solid
foundation in place to continue our work to address the 50% of vision loss that is
preventable!
We thank you for joining us in our fight to protect the gift of sight for all. Through
your continued support, we hope that we may someday see a time when
preventable vision loss is eradicated.
With gratitude,
Legacy Society members
help PBO to continue our sight-saving work through a gift to Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate in their wills, trusts or estate plans. Members of our Legacy Society include:

Partner Organization Spotlight
PBO is proud to partner with The
CommunityCare Clinics (CCC) in
Toledo by providing training for their
Vision Screeners. CCC is one of the
largest student-run free clinics in the
country and is operated by faculty and
students from The University of
Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. A full range of medical services
are provided for thousands of uninsured and underinsured people from the
Northwest Ohio area every year, including vision services through PBOs Vision
Care Outreach Program.
Patients are provided with vision screenings, comprehensive eye examinations,
and donated eyewear.
Vaishnavi Aradhyula, MS, MD Candidate and Executive Director of
CommunityCare Clinics, expressed her enthusiasm about implementing the
screenings at the clinic, as well as her commitment to assuring their sustainability
in the future.
PBO earned the highest level 2020
Platinum Seal of Transparency from
GuideStar, the worlds largest source of
nonprofit information. To achieve the
Platinum level, extensive information was
added to the PBO Nonprofit Profile: basic
contact and organizational information; in-
depth financial information; and
quantitative information about goals,
strategies, and progress toward our
mission.
This recognition shows PBOs
commitment to transparency. By providing

The research findings of the recipients of PBO's 2020 Young Investigator Student
Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research were shared during a virtual
Vision Research Scientific Forum with topics ranging from: retinopathy of prematurity
that occurs in infants; a treatment regimen for age-related macular degeneration (AMD);
and a process that reduces the amount of farsightedness in infants.
This PBO award provides training support for future generations of outstanding female
scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers
relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness.
16th Annual Eyes on Capitol Hill goes Virtual
PBO Volunteer Leaders Named to Patient Engagement Program
Kylie (Glass) Gang, PBO Board Member,
and her mother Laura Glass (Alliance,
Ohio) were recently invited to serve as
expert advisory board members for the
Prevent Blindness A.S.P.E.C.T. (Advocacy,
Support, Perspective, Empowerment,
Communication and Training ) Patient
Engagement Program.
They were invited to partner with Prevent
Blindness on this unique program because
of their life-long personal experience with
vision challenges and leadership
experience in advocating for wider access
to vision and eye health information and
resources.
Kylie Gang (L) and Laura Glass
All three of the Glass children had
significant vision problems from an early
age, including Kylie. Two of them had
congenital cataracts.
Prevent Blindness received a grant for the period
July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021 from the
Save Our Sight (SOS) Fund for PBO to train and
certify 1,000 childrens vision screeners at
primary healthcare practices and public/private
child care organizations and schools. The funding
comes from Ohioans who donate $1 or more to
SOS when they renew their Ohio motor vehicle
registrations.
Funding also provides for the purchase of vision
screening equipment kits. PBO worked in
conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health
and the National Center for Childrens Vision and
Eye Health to develop a new vision screening
training/certification program to support the new
national universal preschool vision screening
recommendations.
PBO is Grateful for Support from Ohio Drivers and the
Save Our Sight Fund for Childrens Vision Screenings
PBO Receives CARES Grant for Necessary Upgrades
PBO was very grateful to be one of 110
Central Ohio agencies to receive CARES
(Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic
Security) Act funding.
A $7,800 grant, provided through the City of
Columbus, allowed for the replacement of
outdated technology that was essential to be
in working order with increased remote
working schedules due to COVID.
Ohio Members of Congress Steve
Stivers, Troy Balderson, Marcy Kaptur,
Dave Joyce, Jim Jordan and Tim Ryan,
and Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob
Portman joined PBO delegates for the
16th annual Prevent Blindness Eyes on
Capitol Hilladvocacy days in February.
Visits were virtual and focused on the
importance of vision and eye health and
how PBO helps their constituents enjoy
good sight for life.
This years Eyes on Capitol Hill
advocates asked Ohios elected officials
to restore the CDCs Vision Health
Initiative (VHI) with $5 million and
maintain the CDCs work in Glaucoma
Prevention with $4 million.
U.S. Congressman, Steve Stivers (bottom) serves as a
co-chair of the Congressional Vision Caucus and is a past
PBO Board of Directors member.
“I have not been able to
afford glasses in over
4 years. I am so grateful
for this program.
Thank you and God Bless.”

Adan E. lives in Southwestern Ohio and his family came to PBO through one of the 1,800+ community partner organizations in
Ohio. Both of his children were signed up to receive eye exams and new glasses at no cost.
This has been tremendously helpful to both of them and has helped them in school. My daughter has an especially significant eye
condition and her vision decreased drastically in just a year. She wasnt able to see well while walking in the halls or sitting in class.
Her glasses have helped her and have given her confidence.
During his daughters vision screening at school, Adan told the school liaison that he thought he, too, needed glasses and that he
had never been to an eye doctor because he had no insurance. The liaison completed Adans application for assistance from PBO.
I am so grateful that I had this opportunity for a free eye exam and glasses. I wear my glasses every day. I also wear them to
work (in construction) and they help me see much better. Thank you so much for this fantastic program.
