Interested in Becoming an Emergency Medical Technician?
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the first level of certification of emergency medical care professionals who
provide life-saving care out of the hospital and transport patients to facilities that provide higher levels of care. All EMT
students are taught to a national standard of care in addition to receiving training specific to the state in which they will
apply for certification. The following websites will help provide more in-depth information about the work EMTs do and

State of Ohio EMS
EMS 1860 is the initial EMT training course, offered by Columbus State Community College (CSCC). EMS 1860 is a 7-
credit hour course, offered all three semesters: Autumn, Spring and Summer. All Students must be at least 18 years old
by the end of week three of the course.
Autumn & Spring Schedule Options -16 weeks (typical schedule, but subject to minor changes):
Morning Section: 8:00 am-11:50 am Tues, Weds, & Thurs + Sat 9:00am-Noon
Afternoon Section: 12:00pm-3:50 pm Tues, Weds, & Thurs + Sat 9:00 am- Noon Evening
Section: 6:00pm-9:50 pm Tues, Weds, & Thurs + Sat 9:00 am -Noon
The Summer Semester schedule condenses the same course content to 11 weeks, expanding the days per week to
Monday-Thursday for 5 hours instead of 4, but eliminates Saturday morning sessions.
All three semesters require clinical shifts at local hospital and field sites, scheduled outside class times.
The first step to begin the process of becoming an EMT is to apply to become a Columbus State Community College student.
Once you have applied to the College and taken the New Student Assessment you must submit a completed EMS 1860 EMT
Health Record. You cannot register for EMS 1860 without a completed and approved health record on file. Please
note: EMS 1860 (Emergency Medical Technician) fills up rather quickly. It is imperative to start on the health record as
soon as possible. The required TB test may take up to 14 days to complete. Note that our hospital and field
clinical partners require COVID vaccinations for clinical placement. Please call the Health Records Office at 614-
287-2450 with any health record questions.
Also, in addition to the health records, students are required to complete a background check (both State and FBI) and
drug screen prior to the first day of class with Corporate Screening at www.VerifyStudents.com (package code
COLU8435) and contact the bookstore for the required EMT student uniform at http://cscc.edu/services/bookstore
(click on Uniform Order Forms and then select EMS).

Locate your classroom prior to the first class. Most EMS courses are held in the GA building at 375 N. Grant Ave on

Check your CSCC email frequently for messages from the EMS faculty and staff prior to the beginning of the
semester.
Students have access to the Blackboard classroom after the fee payment deadline has passed. Access the EMS
1860 course using the log in and password provided to you. Blackboard Learn (cscc.edu) The EMS 1860 Syllabus
and EMT Student Handbook will be available to students 5 days prior to the first day of the semester.
