audio tours, Napier Prison Ghost, Prison

‘Back to the 1930s Tour’. These tours are

Join Hawke’s Bay historian and author
Michael Fowler for a guided Art Deco
tour around the Hastings CBD. His tour
views some spifng examples of Art Deco
buildings that Hastings built after the 1931
Hawke’s Bay earthquake. Included as part
of the tour are dramatic stories of how
the 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake affected
Hastings – including some remaining
earthquake scars of the event. The tour
takes around 75 minutes.

and a raging inferno. However, from
these ashes, Napier emerged anew. Join
our 90-minute tour, lled with riveting
stories, vivid anecdotes, and a select few
survivors accounts from the 1931 Hawke’s
Bay Earthquake and ensuing inferno.
These resilient structures bear witness to
a city’s unyielding spirit. Walk through the
city, where you will witness Napier’s rebirth
in dazzling Art Deco style, a testament to
human determination and reinvention.

The Hawke’s Bay Branch of the Royal
Society Te Apārangi, presents The 1931
Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Commemoration
Lecture. This year Professor Jason
Ingham of the University of Auckland
will give a lecture on assessing and
upgrading existing buildings for
earthquakes with relevance to Hawke’s
Bay Art Deco buildings. This annual lecture
commemorates the 1931 Earthquake,
without which we would have no Art Deco.
