The IHSAA Execuve Commiee awards the Phil N. Eskew & Blake Ress Mental Atude
Awards to an outstanding senior parcipant in each classicaon of the Football State Finals.
The recipients of this award, nominated by their principal and coach, were determined to
have best demonstated mental atude, scholarship, leadership and athlec ability in football.
The 6A, 5A and 4A awards are named in honor of Eskew, the late third commissioner of the
IHSAA, who guided the Associaon from 1962 to 1976. Under his direcon, the IHSAA football
tournament was iniated in 1973.
Beginning in 2015, the 3A, 2A and 1A awards were re-named in honor of Commissioner
Emeritus Blake Ress, the IHSAA’s seventh commissioner from 2000 to 2011.
The Indianapolis Colts, IHSAA corporate partner and presenng sponsor of the football state
tournament, present a $1,000 scholarship to the general scholarship fund of each recipient’s
school.

IHSAA Football State Championship Records Book
IHSAA Football Tournament Timeline
1970: Bob Springer of Indianapolis Washington, Hub Etchison of Richmond,
Archie Owen of Evansville Bosse, Tom Sells of Bloomington, John Friend of
Munster, and Jules Siegle of East Chicago Washington, original members of the
Indiana Football Coaches Associaon, meet to discuss a plan to create a high
school football state tournament.
June 2, 1972: Aer meeng with IHSAA Commissioner Phil N. Eskew and
two years of tweaking, a proposal to establish a high school football state
tournament was approved by the IHSAA Athlec Council.
Nov. 16-17, 1973: With 316 teams aempng to qualify for the post-season
through a point system, 12 teams (four in each class) compete in the rst annual
state tournament with South Bend Washington (3A), Greeneld-Central (2A)
and Mishawaka Marian (1A) winning their respecve state championships.
1976: Twenty-four teams (eight in each class) qualify for the state tournament.
1983: A fourth class is added and 64 teams (16 in each class) qualify for the
state tournament.
1984: For the rst me, the four state championship games are all played in
one locaon as the Hoosier Dome in downtown Indianapolis hosts the games.
In previous years, the championship games were each played at a dierent high
school venue.
1985: A h class is added and this is the rst year all schools automacally
qualify for the post-season, consistent with how IHSAA state tournaments in
other sports are formaed.
Nov. 23-24, 2007: For the rst me, the ve state championship games are
streamed online and available to anyone, anywhere at IHSAASports.org.
2008: The state nals are played at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis
for the rst me with the ve championship games drawing a record 56,050
including 40,680 for the 3A, 4A and 5A games played on Saturday.
2009: The IHSAA announces a three-year presenng sponsorship agreement
with the Indianapolis Colts to support the enre high school football state
tournament and ensure the state championship games will connue to be
played at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts become the rst professional sports
franchise in the country to partner with a high school associaon for this type of
sponsorship.
June 22, 2012: The IHSAA Execuve Commiee approves a two-year
tournament success factor in each team sport (baseball, basketball, football,
soccer, soball volleyball), an accumulaon of points by which any school team
would move up one enrollment class based on tournament series performance
